There's no CD drive, so any disk would be rather useless. It would be nice to breath some life into this old girl, I'd hate to trash an otherwise functional machine due to the lack of a USB port or a stack of old Win98SE install floppies. If I can get a bootable installation of Win98SE onto the USB connected IDE drive, I should be able to return that drive to the old Compaq machine and have a working system again. The problem I face is that when I run setup on the Win98 drive (F:), it won't run because it thinks I want to install it onto the C Drive which is running a far more recent OS than the old Win98.ĭoes anyone know of a way to install Win98SE onto what is basically a USB drive so that you can boot from that drive into Win98? Think Windows-to-go but old school. My goal is to install Win98SE onto the USB connected IDE drive(E:).

I've the Windows 98SE disk in the CD drive on the Win10 machine (F: on my system). I've an IDE to USB adapter and my Windows 10 machine sees the IDE drive just fine(E: on my system).

The guides all seem to want to have you either install from CD or USB to the C:, nice but not helpful. I can also find how to make a Win98 boot disk, but that just puts me into DOS, it still needs a seperate drive to hold the install files so this is not an option either. There's lots of tutorials on making a Win98 USB install drive, but that's not what I am after. I need to install Windows 98SE onto the drive without trying to find a floppy drive that I can connect to a modern machine or some weird adapter to get the old machine to see a USB drive. The catch is that there's no OS on the IDE drive! I've swapped out the old drive with a functional IDE drive and the BIOS detects the new drive just fine. The hard drive that was in the system died a long time ago but I can boot off a floppy.
